Teresa & Bruce - New Year's Eve Wedding!

Teresa & Bruce are as in love with each other as I've ever seen with any other couple! They are just so cute together. When they asked me to photograph their New Year's Eve wedding I was honoured to do it.

Dave had prior obligations (with it being New Year's Eve and all) so I enlisted my girlfriend Nicole (who has a fantastic fashion design business called Vertigogo Designs) to help out with lighting for the evening.

Teresa & Bruce were married at their home here in Edmonton. The house was converted into an amazing wedding venue! Teresa's daughter Andrea made some amazing artwork from literally thrift store finds! Lots of candles lighting the home made it so cozy. With only approximately 40 guests present, it was a very intimate affair.

We found some time to venture outside for a few photos after the ceremony. Teresa was quite a trooper and spent our time outside without a coat on. Luckily it was one of the nicer evenings we've had in a while so that helped, but she was still shivering but tried not to let it show.

Nicole and I were thrilled to experience this evening with the lovebirds and will remember this New Year's Eve for decades to come!

Check out a few of the moments from the night below.

Christine and Roy

The trick with winter weddings is to not look cold.

While Christine and Roy had their actual wedding in warm, warm, Hawaii, they elected to have their hometown reception in December. Quite the contrast! These two were troopers. This happened to be the first day of the year where it felt cold outside. The session involved a lot of "1,2,3,... coat off!", shoot, shoot, shoot, then "coat back on!".

The other cool (pun intended) element of this shoot was the history here. In a former life, Christine, Roy and I had all worked at Starbucks together. In fact, that's where these two met. I was honoured that the asked me to shoot their home gathering at Violino Italian Restaurant. We even hopped across the street to take some meaningful photos in a Starbucks.

This was such a fun night. Congrats you two! Here's to many years of happiness.

"What Camera Should I Buy?"

People ask us all the time: “What camera should I buy?” The answer isn’t as easy as you’d think. Imagine being asked, “What car should I buy?” It would depend on factors like how many in your family, do you have kids, where do you drive, how often, safety needs etc. It would be a used Toyota Echo for one person, a Dodge Caravan for another, and a brand new Chevy Silverado for someone else. So to answer the camera question, there are some things to consider:

  • Megapixels
  • Brand
  • Photography knowledge level
  • Intended use
  • Budget

Before we look at each of these, let’s define each main camera type.

Cell Phone Camera

As you already know by now, this is the camera that comes with your cell phone. To be perfectly honest, there are some really great camera phones now. On my trip to Ireland this year I used my cell phone to take tons of photos… and they turned out just fine (but I did use my Canon 5D Mark III whenever possible).

Point-and-Shoot

This type of camera is usually quite portable (i.e., tiny) and has fewer bells and whistles than a DSLR camera would have. That doesn’t mean they are simple cameras though. Many of today’s point-and-shoot cameras can do a lot of things right in the camera (HDR, panorama, face-detection) that aren’t always available in DSLR cameras. One main difference is the lenses. Point-and-shoot cameras don’t have interchangeable lenses, whereas a DSLR does (yes, some cameras that would be called point-and-shoot do actually have changeable lenses – but they are also quite a bit bigger).

One major warning: stay away from “digital zoom”. Photos taken in the digital zoom range, while great for getting in close from far away, tend to be quite fuzzy/grainy. “Optical zoom” is the ideal here.

DSLR (Digital Single-lens Reflex)

These are the big boys. They won’t fit in your pocket. The flexibility of changing lenses is the key here. The sky is the limit – and so is the price – when it comes to different lenses. A nature photographer may want a big zoom lens that allows photos to be taken from very far away. A basic 100-400mm lens will run around $1800. A nice all-around lens with good wide-angle and pretty good zoom (18-200mm) that would be great for travel photography, soccer photos etc., would be more like $600. The lens we use almost exclusively is a 24-70mm lens with an f/2.8 aperture and it could be yours for $2500.

Apart from the ability to change lenses, the biggest reason you would want a DSLR is creativity. You can set all of the dials to get the end result you are looking for. Yes, it will take a fair amount of time to master these dials, but the satisfaction of seeing your vision come to life in a final image is unbeatable.

Mirrorless Cameras

These cameras are fairly new but getting quite popular in the photography world. They are very similar to a DSLR except they don’t have the moving mirror that is found in a DSLR. This makes it quieter as well as quite a bit lighter. With the purchase of an adapter, you can still have the ability to change lenses. Like with a regular DSLR, there are several price ranges you will find, depending on your needs (price range $500-$2000). For the purposes of this article, Mirrorless cameras will be included in the DSLR discussion.

Now let’s look at what you should consider before you purchase a camera.

Megapixels

We have now reached a point where this question is no longer a factor. I only put this here so you realize that. Don’t let the salesperson push you into a higher priced camera just because it has more megapixels.

When I went on my first international trip to India in 2004, all I had with me was a little Canon point-and-shoot that was a measly 3.2 megapixels. The photos I took allowed me to blow them up for printing to at least 16x20. Compare that to today’s cameras that have a minimum 14 megapixels (my new Nexus 6 phone has 16 MP!!) and you’ll see why, unless you’re planning on blowing up your photos for display on billboards, the number of megapixels just doesn’t matter any more.

Brand

We recommend sticking with the major brands. You may find great deals on camera brands you’ve never heard of, but you truly get what you pay for here. The major brands have lenses that will be more durable and reliable photo after photo. There’s a reason they have been around so long. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus… these are names you should be looking for.

Photography Knowledge Level

Do you understand how to make Exposure, Shutter Speed, and ISO all work together? Do you know what a shallow depth of field means? If so, you might be in the market for a DSLR instead of a point-and-shoot. If not, you might find the dials and manual settings of a DSLR a little overwhelming.

That being said, if you are a beginner but hope to be a Pro one day, then a DSLR might be what you are after. A DSLR camera still has the option for Auto operation so to start you should be just fine. On the flipside, I started out in photography using a point-and-shoot that also had manual functions. I used Auto for a while but decided to figure out what those other dials meant and in a short time I was on my way to being a photographer.

Intended Use

This is probably the most important thing to consider when making your choice of camera. If your whole goal is to get photos of the dog/cat/kids running around the house being cute, then a point-and-shoot – or even maybe just your cell phone camera – will work just fine. But if you’re looking to get more artistic travel photos, or perhaps more portrait-style photos of your dog/cat/kids, then a DSLR would be a better choice. If you want to get better photos of your kids playing soccer/hockey/football then a DSLR would be helpful here as well. Bottom line: there is no sense spending the extra money on a DSLR if you don’t have to.

Budget

This one is simple – if you don’t have $2000 to spend on a camera then you won’t be getting a fancy DSLR camera. The whole point of this article is for you to really think about what you need. Only get what you can afford, obviously, but also only get the level of camera that will work for you. Don’t buy the DSLR if a point-and-shoot will do. Don’t buy a point-and-shoot if your cell phone will get the photos you are looking for.

A quick look online will show you that a decent point-and-shoot will run somewhere between $100-$400. An entry-level DSLR could be yours for as little as $600 but will more likely be in the $1000-$1500 range. The Canon 5D Mark III that we use currently goes for $3500 (not including a lens).

Summary

Not everyone needs a DSLR. Any level of camera can produce amazing photos. I won’t get too philosophical here, but having the most fancy camera with the biggest most-expensive lenses, doesn’t mean your photos are instantly going to be hanging on gallery walls. A camera – any camera – is only a tool. It doesn’t come with an artist’s eye built in.

We hope this helps you make the right camera choice.

Brad in Ireland 2015

In September of this year, my friend Brian and I headed to Ireland on a fantastic trip. We started with a very quick overnight stay in Dublin, rented a car and headed down South to County Kerry (with a quick stop in Cork for lunch). Kerry was the site of the reason for our trip - the wedding of Laura & Glen.

After having a fantastic time at the wedding, we headed off the next morning to Limerick, then Galway. The next morning we zipped up to the North to spend a day in Letterkenny (the home of my family ancestors!). Off to Belfast for a day then on to Dublin. Dropped the car off and spent 3 more days there. We then flew over to London and spent 3 days there before flying back home.

It was a trip of a lifetime and I'm so glad I have some photos to show for it. Take a look at some of my personal favourites below.

Keri & James' Kids

My great friend Brian's sister Keri and her husband James have had me take photos for their family since their first child, Hailey, was born. It has been amazing seeing her grow up before my photographic eyes! There are now three little ones (including Emma and Charlotte) and each of them are just so darn cute... it's pretty easy to get shots of them that make me smile. Here is a look at one of my all-time photos I've taken: Hailey - this was when she was not quite a year old (she's the first one in the gallery below - I can hardly tell it's her in that old photo).

Have a look at the gallery below to see the photos we got from our session this year.

Burning Bluebeard

Love, love, LOVE working with theatre companies.

The creativity just flows. Even when the session is in a black rehearsal space, a little set design later, magic happens. This shoot was no exception. Our inspiration for the shoot came from an old prop frame for a long ago show. There were two of them and we just messed around.

We initially tried standing up the frames, then it hit us...

...lay on the ground! Check out the behind the scenes shot.

We are so happy with how these turned out and are excited to see the show. If you are interested, the details are below!

The Pipella's

It is always fantastic to catch up with a family as they grow. When we first worked with these three, it was a few weeks after Violet was born.

Now she is running around and exploring like you wouldn't believe. One of the great things about this session was that we the entire shoot was shot in the small park behind their house. It is always so cool to have the location have a connection to the family.

Thanks guys for having. We look forward to the next round soon.

Amanda & Jason

Downtown weddings. Our favourite.

While Brad was off shooting a wedding in Ireland, I had the pleasure of shooting Amanda and Jason's big day. We started by running around 104th St, finding all the awesome nooks and crannies that our city has to offer. Then from there, we headed to a beautiful ceremony at the Yellowhead Brewery followed by awesome music spun by Chris Bullough, dancing , and even a makeshift photo booth.

Thanks you two for having me as part of your day. I really had a great time and can't wait to see where your adventures take you.

Laura & Glen - A Wedding in Ireland

I have always wanted to travel to Ireland. My family heritage is Irish and I have longed to visit the place where my ancestors came from. Well, I was able to make that happen thanks to Laura & Glen this year!

Laura & Glen met in New Orleans while Glen was on a trip from Calgary with his buddies and Laura was visiting from Ireland with her girlfriends. The stars truly aligned for these two to find each other and fall in love.

I used to work with Glen at TELUS many years ago and when he messaged me to discuss his wedding in Ireland and the opportunity to be their photographer arose, I was over the moon! Not only would I get to capture the moments from Glen's big day, but I would also be able to tour Ireland. Dave was not able to make the trip with me, but my friend Brian came along to hold lights and camera bags etc. He did a fantastic job and I know he had a great time... and they enjoyed having him there as well. I'll be writing about my Ireland adventures in an upcoming post, so for now, please take a look at the gallery below to see some of the photos from the wedding held in Killarney, County Kerry. The reception was held at the Dunloe Hotel which had a castle on their grounds - and yes, I know there are several photos below with this castle but come on, it's a castle! How could I not take a million photos of it??.

I'm so very happy for Laura & Glen. And I am honoured that I was able to be there to photograph their day. Thanks for having me!

Lauren & Tim

The big day has come and gone.

What a fun wedding this was and we knew it would be after the awesome engagement session we had with them a month before. The great thing about Lauren and Tim's wedding was it featured two of our favourite elements during a wedding photo shoot. A return to the place where the couple first met, and a place for the wedding party to sit, get a bite to eat, and something to drink mid photo shoot. In this case The Keg Steakhouse at South Edmonton Common satisfied both of those elements.

After photos, we headed to the Derrick Golf & Winter Club for a fantastic dinner and a great party. The night wrapped up with the bride bringing the house down with a karaoke 'Sweet Child of Mine". Such a great night.

Hears to many great years ahead Lauren and Time.

A Cold and Cool Fall Session

We met Leslie on the very first wedding Brad and I shot together. At that time, she was pregnant with her first. Now all these years later we had the pleasure of photographing the whole brood.

We took them to a spot downtown that we've wanted to shoot at for a long time. It offered such diverse settings and only within a block radius. We are really happy with how this session turned out. Check it out for yourself.

L'unithéatre

We were honoured when earlier this summer L'unithéatre approached us to help design the promotional material for their entire season. They challenged us to come us a series of images that had the same feel but each connected to one individual element of each show. We are used to shooting with actors to help create this kind of material so it was fun to play around with photo techniques to pull off a tone with inanimate objects. Only for La Passion de Narcisse Mondoux did we actually reach out to some lovely hand models to help build the image.

The first show of the season, LES BLUES DES OUBLIÉES is up and runs until October 24th. Please check it out if you get the chance. From the reviews they have been getting, it looks to be a stellar show. Here are the details:

Fall Portrait Blitz 2015

Another Portrait Blitz has come and gone and we've delivered the images to all of the families that participated in the event. We thought we'd share some of the images from the day with you.

We certainly had a great day with everyone. Big thanks to everyone who participated. It was great that we got to work with a mix of new clients and some loyal clients as well. We love seeing the young ones growing up from photo shoot to photo shoot!!

We plan on having more and more of these photo blitz events so make sure to "like" our Facebook page so you can get updates on exactly when we are having another event.

Take a look at some of the shots from our Fall Portrait Blitz below.

Atticus

We love new born lifestyle sessions.

It it so great to take photos of a new family in their home, among their things. It gives the photos such a personal feel. Atticus' (or Bat-ticus as he was dubbed in the session) shoot is a great example of that. The warmth of the light in the sitting room. The family all dressed in their finest uniforms.  This photo shoot screamed of the personality of this family.

We had such a great time working with these three. Hope you enjoy the glimpse at this fun session.

Bone Cage

Theatre Yes is back and we are happy to be working with them again.

This time they are producing Catherine Banks' Bone Cage. We love working with this group.  Every time they approach us, we know we are in for something cool, and that we will have the artistic license to help sell the emotion of their upcoming project.

In meeting for this show, we talked a lot about the rage and frustration that is an underlying current throughout the story. We made that a central theme of the images. There has been a lot of positive feedback on how these turned out.

See for yourself, then follow the links to get all the info on the show.

Jasmin & Andrew's Wedding

Andrew, the groom from the wedding we shot on July 4th, has been in the wedding party of TWO previous weddings we've been part of (Robert and Melissa, and Rob and Alicia). Finally we were able to shoot HIS wedding (the phrase "always a groomsman, never a groom" came to mind of course). It goes without saying that we adore Jasmin & Andrew. They are so fun to be around. Their whole group of friends made for a great day for Dave and I. All we can say is that we hope another member of this group gets married soon so we can be around them again in a wedding setting.

Take a look at some of the photos we were able to capture from Jasmin & Andrew's big day.

Cassie & Drew

We captured a rainbow!

It was a bright one too. While traipsing through the river valley, trying to avoid the rain, we stopped to check a setting on the camera and when we looked up, we saw one of the clearest rainbows we had seen in a long time. Such a great thing to catch.

After that, we led Cassie and Drew under Saskatchewan Drive and over to the High Level Bridge for some night time shots. Pretty happy with how this session turned out.

Looking forward to this wedding next year.

It's Love and Other Reasons to Panic

This was such a fun session. We spent a lot of time with Elisa and Delia trying to nail the tone of their upcoming show, It's Love and Other Reasons to Panic premiering this week at the Edmonton Fringe festival. We love how this turned out and would also love if you went to see them in action.

Here are the show details:

Victoria and Rachel are an unlikely pair, and when they meet it's not exactly love at first sight. Victoria, not feeling completely fulfilled, leaves her relationship of 7 years to rediscover who she is and find her confidence. Rachel is a powerhouse with a bit of a clumsy side perfectly happy with being on her own and in control of her own life. But when Rachel meets the man of her dreams, these ladies lives will take a very different turn; especially since Rachel's new love interest, is Victoria's ex-fiancée. They say opposites attract, but will their new friendship survive being this opposite? Come and have a laugh while these two ladies try and figure out what love means.
