River Valley Maternity Session

Pairing this stylish couple with the beautiful River Valley made for some great photos! As you might tell from the photos below, we had a blast with these two... lots of laughs for sure.

Mama-to-be is about to give birth any day now so we thought we'd share some of the images from their session with you.

Lauren & Tim

We will be photographing Lauren & Tim's wedding in only a few weeks. We did an engagement session with them recently at various spots in downtown Edmonton and had a great time. We managed to avoid the large crowds enjoying The Taste of Edmonton and laughed when the gentle breeze blowing acted like a wind machine for Lauren's hair.

We're certainly looking forward to working with these two on their big day!

Take a look at some of the images from the session:

Betts & Her Family

Betts managed to wrangle up her family for family portraits this year. I was so glad she chose us to take the photos. And I was even more glad that the rain stayed away for the shoot!

We did the session downtown so we could get a good mix of nature and urban shots. The family was so good about zipping around to tons of different spots and it resulted in photos with so many different looks.

Take a look at a few examples from the session:

Sylvia & David

What an honour it was to be a part of this beautiful celebration.

It was a small church wedding on a gorgeous day in May when it had snowed only a few days before. It was quiet and intimate. Even the power going out only added to the magic of the ceremony.

Afterwards, we stole off to the river valley for a few quick portrait shots before these two whisked away in their T-Bird off to celebrate their new marriage with those closest to them.

Enjoy a small sample of the photos from that day.

Jasmin & Andrew - Engagement Shoot

We met Jasmin & Andrew a few years ago. Over those years, we have shot two weddings where Andrew was in the wedding party (Robert & Melissa and Rob & Alicia) and now it's Andrew's turn to the be the main man. We met up with Andrew and his wife-to-be Jasmin by the Shaw Conference Centre for their engagement session. It was a beautiful day and we had fun moving from one location to another (16 in all I think). Can't wait for July 4th!

Here are some of the images from their session:

Elect Sarah Hoffman in Edmonton Glenora

Sarah Hoffman - Headshots - 20150116 - 0004.jpg

With election fever sweeping Alberta, I thought it time to post about my friend Sarah.

She is currently running for the Alberta New Democrats in the Edmonton Glenora riding.

I have known her for a long time. Sarah is one of the most honest, and dedicated public servants I've ever met. She has been a great advocate for the voices of students, teachers, and parents during her time as Chair of the Edmonton Public School Board.

She is one of the good ones. If you live in Glenora, give her page a look. You can also check her out on Facebook and Twitter

Below, are some shots from the Glenora debate in which she participated last week where she did a fantastic job.

In any case, make sure your voice is heard on Tuesday, May 5th.

Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Hollie in the Parkade

Hollie and I agreed to meet on April 1st for a photo shoot. We were going to shoot outdoors in a few alleys around downtown Edmonton. March 31st the weather here was beautiful! It got to a high of +19 and was nice and sunny. Of course I looked at the forecast and noted that April 1st was supposed to be drastically different and only a high of +2 with snow. I was a bit sceptical (it might have been The Weather Network pulling our legs for April Fools Day) but when it started raining late in the day on March 31st I messaged Hollie and suggested a change of plans and arranged to shoot in an underground parkade instead. Even though Hollie assured me she was a trooper and could handle it, I convinced her the indoors would be better for both of us.

Well that was a good decision! April 1st was horrible… lots of snow and crazy wind. And if it got to +2 I would be surprised. We sure would have looked like fools if we tried to do this shoot outside!!

This was my first shoot with Hollie and I have to say I am very happy with how it went. An added bonus was having her Mom along for the shoot – she was able to hold a reflector for me for the bulk of the photos. I don’t often get that luxury… ha!

Take a look at the photos below to see what we were able to get from our April Fools Day shoot.

Chantel in Curls... and in Colour!

A few weeks ago I did a photo shoot with my friend Chantel. Our intent was for the photos to be black & white and that's how I processed them and posted them in this blog. But I was playing around with them recently and I like how they look in colour as well. I thought I'd include a few for you to check out here.

Brad's Trip to Ixtapa

As the snow returns to Edmonton this weekend, it seems like the perfect time to post my favourite photos from my trip to Ixtapa from February of this year.

In case you aren't familiar with Ixtapa (I wasn't) it's actually a 10 minute drive from Zihuatanejo. And if you've seen The Shawshank Redemption, you'll recognize that as the place where Andy Dufresne says he wants to retire. That was all I needed to hear to book my trip there!

The sunsets during my trip were so great! I took hundreds and hundreds of photos of just sunsets. I've narrowed down my favourites for you to these ones here:

And here are some of my favourites from the rest of my trip:

You can take a look at a few larger galleries as well.

Chantel in Curls

Chantel Hilton is awesome! Over the last year or so she has been a willing subject for various photo shoots. It isn't always easy to find models who will let me practice fashion photography but Chantel has definitely been there for me.

This past Saturday she got her hair done (did?) in the most fabulous curls by her friend Krissy Dewalt-Peters and put on a fantastic skirt that was made for her by her designer friend Nomin. We did some shots beside her building, then at the giant window in her apartment then headed to The Commodore Restaurant on Jasper and 107th to do more shots.

I am so happy with how these photos turned out! Chantel looks very much Marilyn Monroe in so many of these (and also a bit "bad Sandy" from Grease as one passerby mentioned). It was definitely a fun shoot - as usual. Thanks again Chantel!!

Junior Achievement - Job Shadow Day

Last month we had the pleasure of photographing a great event for Junior Achievement. It was their annual Job Shadow Day.  This is a day when the young people in the program get to shadow leaders of different businesses for the day. The companies we were able to photograph at were Ledcor, Cathton Investments Ltd., and Servus Credit Union.

This great day concluded at City Hall with a presentation from Councilman Andrew Knack, delivering a proclamation from Mayor Don Iveson declaring the February 3rd, 2015 as Job Shadow Day in the City of Edmonton.

It was great to see these young people so interested in their own future. It was equally great to see these companies showing an honest interest in being part of their development.

Here is a look at a few of the images from the day.

Nevada & Justin

Dave and I were contacted one day asking if we could arrange to do a photo shoot for a band. The challenging part was that they needed it done that night! Well, we made it happen and we were glad it worked out.

We met Nevada & Justin at Giovanni Music where Nevada teaches. After scoping the location quickly (we only had one hour in the space) we found a great stairwell to use. We also set up a white backdrop to get some other shots of the couple.

60 minutes later we were packing up the gear to go home. And we’re pretty pleased with the images we were able to get too!

Check out Nevada & Justin on their Reverb Nation page.

It was a pleasure working with these two and we look forward to working together soon!

Drat the Cat

Two summers ago, we had the pleasure of working with Kate Ryan and Plain Jane Theatre for their production of Little Fish at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival. It was a great shoot with a fun group of people.

Because of that great experience, I was excited when a message from Kate arrived in my inbox asking for some photos and design work for their new show Drat the Cat. She explained that she wanted to capture the feel of the original poster, while still giving it a fresh take.

We shot several different looks and then landed on the final poster image you see below. We encourage you to check out their production at the end of the month. Looks like it's going to be a great time. Details below.

Ludwig & Lohengrin

We love doing shoots for theatre companies. We get even more excited when they ask us to follow up with promotional design work.

That's exactly what Third Street Theatre did for their upcoming production of Ludwig & Lonhengrin, which is opening at the end of this month. Even though they are based out of Calgary, it worked out that the playwright and star was in Edmonton last week so we were able to arrange a session.

We went to the river valley and set out to capture the feel of this production. The grey skies really lent to the ambience and I think that comes through in the shots.

Check out the details for their production below and if you like what you see, hit up their Facebook page to stay up to date with this and future productions.

The Laws of Thermodynamics

Sessions like this just get our creative juices following. We can always count on the good people of Theatre Yes! to throw us some awesome challenges and this shoot was no different. Last year, it was shooting in a variety of elevators throughout the downtown core for the National Elevator Project. This year, the apocalypse.

How to we pull of a post-apocalyptic look in the middle of winter in Edmonton? Why, we head to a scrapyard of course.

Cody Porter was such a trooper. Climbing anywhere we asked. Getting handful after handful of sand poured on his head. All to help ensure we got the best possible images we could.

If you are interested in checking out the show. Here are the details.

Cheerleader!

Our hearts broke the morning we heard of the Roxy fire.

It became very important to help in any way we could. When we found out that Human Loser, the company that had their opening night scheduled the day the fire broke out, was going to be holding a one night only read of Cheerleader! at the Timms Centre for the Arts, we knew if was where we could jump in.

It was a stripped down version of the show but the crowd was enthralled. Here are a few images from the night.

Bonnie and Doug

What an experience!

What a beautiful wedding.

Bonnie and Doug booked us several years ago to shoot their big day. It feels like so long ago that we braved the bitter February cold for their engagement session. When we signed up for it, it was going to be a standard in-Edmonton event. As time passed however, the idea of a Mexican wedding emerged and we couldn't have been more excited to be a part of it.

The two-week affair started with a small, intimate ceremony at the Sawridge Inn in Edmonton where Doug, a newly graduated RCMP officer, was decked out in his Red Serge, while Bonnie looked stunning in her first of two dresses. We took a few photos there then we were off to Cancun.

A beautiful stay at the Dreams Puerto Aventuras. The staff were excellent. The food was exceptional. The location, every photographer's dream. We are so happy with how the photos turned out.

Here are some of the shots from the Edmonton portion of the wedding.

Thanks again for having us Bonnie and Doug. We are so happy for the two of you.

The M-A Family

I'm sure when people think of Edmonton, the below images are what come to mind. We shot this session right after some new fallen snow had blanketed the city. It was simply gorgeous outside. Such a perfect time for a photo session. Tossing snow in the air. Making fresh tracks. All of it in a place this family frequents on a regular basis.

This is Edmonton. This is one of the reasons we love living here. Enjoy.
