A Baseball Wedding Teaser!

Robert & Melissa got on page three of the Edmonton Journal!

Here is a teaser shot from the wedding Brad and I did on Saturday. Normally we like to be the first ones to release a wedding photo to the world, but in Robert and Melissa's case, I guess it is okay if the Edmonton Journal lets the cat out of the bag.

This is the full image. We had such a blast at this unique shoot. The couple and bridal party were real troopers.

Thanks for making us a part of your special day. More shots to follow soon!

Urban Maternity

We were contacted by Meagan and Sean as they were the lucky recipients of a photo session purchased by her sister. Several months back, Brad and I donated a session to Watch Me Productions for their fundraiser for 'An Evening with Shel Silverstein". Brad and I being big supporters of the arts couldn't have been happier to help out.

When it was time for her session, Meagan (who is having twins) made it very clear that she didn't want the normal type of maternity shots, but really wanted something that matched her and her husband's personalities. She came to the right place. This is out favourite type of shoot.

Check out some of the stuff we got from that day and check the Portraits section of our page for other similar shoots we've done.

Bromance at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival

This is weird.

In the last few years, I have done so much work for others that it is kind of strange working on something of my own. But yes, I am stepping back into the theatre world with my good friend Mark Stubbings, and we are mounting a brand new show at Red Square Vodka House for this year's fringe festival.

Bromance, a new comedy by Mark Stubbings. It has the awesome talents of Mark and Taylor Chadwick as club promoters Butch and Marcel who are about to have their lives changed by a woman played by Elena Porter. Even douchebags need love too. I am directing this baby.

This is going to be a fun show and I hope to see you down there.

Here are the details for when and where you can check it out!

Jamie & Nicole

I have known Jamie and Nicole for several years now so I was thrilled that they selected Dave and I to photograph their upcoming wedding in September.

A few weeks ago we set out to take their engagement photos. After one postponement due to horrible storms we were able to get together to do the shoot (even though only an hour prior it looked like we might have to postpone due to weather again -  luckily it cleared up nicely!).

It was funny to hear them both express that they really didn't know what to do as the "models". Looking at the images we were able to capture, you would think they were pros!

We are looking forward to spending their wedding day with them... can't wait to see these pros in action again!!

A Brontë Burlesque

Send in the Girls returns with their new soon to be Edmonton International Fringe Festival hit, A Brontë Burlesque!

These sold out mavens of burlesque are bringing their unique spin on the Tudor Queens, and this time applying it to the lives of Charlotte, Anne, Emily and Branwel Brontë. Once again I had the pleasure of being their official photographer and poster designer.

The idea was to keep it similar to last year's design while at the same time coming off fresh and original. To add to that, this is the first time I also designed Facebook Timeline cover photos for each of the ladies to display on their personal pages as well as a group one for the Send in the Girls Burlesque page.

It was a lot of fun and I'm really proud of how it turned out. Really hope to see you at the show this August.

A Fun Shoot on a Hot Day

It was +30°C.

I met Cynthia while doing photos for the Snow Globe Festival of Children's Theatre. As a Christmas present, she wanted to get a multi-generational family photo done. They were all going to be together in July and it would be the perfect opportunity.

Seven months later, we met up at Mill Creek ravine on the, to that point, hottest day of the year. Two grandparents, several kids and partners and 5 dogs later, we got some pretty fun stuff. They were such a great group to work with and I think it shows in the shots I got.

Take a look here and then head over to the Portraits section of the page to see other family photos we've done.

Naisa, Stera & Samara

Naisa and I worked together for years schlepping coffee at Starbucks. Through the virtues of Facebook we have stayed in touch long since we made our last lattés.

She has since been married and had her beautiful daughter, Samara.

It was time for family photos, so Brad and I went out to Rundle park with these three to capture a moment in time of this young family. Between the geese and the wadding in the water to get the shot, we had a blast.

Check out what we got from that day and more like this in the Portraits section of the site.

Erica & Tyler - Engagement Session

With just over a month until their wedding, we went with Erica & Tyler to take some engagement photos. We took them to the base of the High Level Bridge at the edge of Kinsmen Park and wandered around finding a ton of interesting little pockets for photos.

It was supposed to rain but it turned out to be a very hot day! We had a ton of fun rooting around the bushes and climbing on bridges again. Erica & Tyler were definitely up for whatever crazy suggestion we put to them. It is going to be a great wedding day for sure!!!

Here are some of our favourites from the engagement session:

who prays for snow on their wedding day?

When I sat down with clients Mike and Linda for our final pre-wedding meeting, Linda was as giddy as a schoolgirl. Why? Because (much to my dismay) it had finally started snowing here in Edmonton. An important thing to point out about this final pre-wedding meeting is that it was actually the first time I ever met Mike and Linda. They live in Australia.

“I am writing to you from Australia. I was given your name after having a wedding consult with Rev Kathryn Cardinal while she was here in Australia recently.”

Kathryn is a friend and former co-worker who performs weddings. Linda found her by doing a simple Google search. As fate would have it, Kathryn was on her way to Australia for a conference. She met up with Linda and it was decided that Kathryn would be performing the ceremony for them. When asked if she knew any photographers, Kathryn was kind enough to throw my name out there.

That was the facebook message I received on January 3, 2010. Our first face-to-face meeting was 2 years and 6 days later. She went on to explain in her message that they were planning a vow renewal ceremony in Edmonton and wanted to know if I was available to take the photos of the event.

Mike is from Edmonton but Linda is from Australia. Several years ago they started chatting online. When they realized that over the course of a few years they had not spent a day without chatting with each other, they knew it was pretty serious. So serious in fact that Mike proposed to Linda - without ever meeting her!! She said yes!!

Shortly after that Mike moved to Australia to be with his new fiancé and they eventually got married there.

Feeling bad for Mike’s family who could not make the big trek to the other side of the world for the wedding, they decided to do it all over again – as a surprise - when they returned to Edmonton for their big visit.

Of course I said I would love to document this big event. And over the next 2 years I grew to know Mike and Linda via facebook. I should point out that Linda is a fantastic Canadian! She is a die-hard Edmonton Oilers fan, celebrates the Canadian holidays (Canada Day, Thanksgiving, opening day of the hockey season etc.) and is generally quite keen on all-things-Canada (especially our Moose for some reason?).

Don’t even get me started on her un-natural obsession with Michael Bublé.

Since it was a winter-themed celebration, the snow falling I mentioned earlier was the icing on the cake for Linda (again, it was not as thrilling to me, that’s for sure).

The day arrived and so did the falling temperature. It was C-O-L-D that day. We stayed out in the cold as long as we could to get some shots and even though we froze our butts off, it was all worth it since we were able to capture some great snow-filled outdoor moments of them.

After a nice ceremony at the Muttart Conservatory, we headed off to The Melting Pot (fondue restaurant!!) for the dinner. We were treated to a fantastic 3-course meal and had plenty of fun.

One special touch we were able to help out with was capturing portraits of the friends and family members near and dear to them both. These photos would serve as nice reminders for them when they returned to Australia.

Here are some of the shots Dave and I were able to capture for Mike and Linda. Hope you like them.

Ruth & Justin

There's a train over head!

One of the things we love about engagement shoots is getting to know the couples of whom we will be taking photos of on their BIG DAY. It lets them get to see how Brad and I work without the stressful time crunch of getting the photo session done in the limited amount of time between the wedding ceremony and the reception.

Brad and I also get to see what the couple is like. What they find funny. The limits they will go to get the shot.

Ruth and Justin are fearless!

We took them to an active, iron railway bridge, had them climb up on the girders and THEN a train came over their heads! It was intense! But the shots speak for themselves. These two are a blast and we are really looking forward to September when we get to spend the whole day with them.

Check out the shots from that day and others like this in the Portraits section of the site.

TELUS Day of Giving 2012

As you have learned by now, Dave and I have day jobs. We both work for TELUS here in Edmonton. One of the things I am most proud of about working at TELUS is knowing how much we give back to the community. I don't just mean how much $$$ TELUS donates to charities, I really mean how much time and energy the people who work at TELUS put into making our communities a better place throughout the year.

There is one special day each year we call the TELUS Day of Giving. It is a day where a massive amount of employees of TELUS bombard the cities we live in to give back.

This year I was asked to photograph a few of the events around town. The first event was one that I took part in last year... the River Valley Cleanup. What is that? Picking up garbage! Yup! This year it was the Kinsmen Park. We scoured each and every crevice of that park to ensure it was spotless.

Dave and his family (wife Derrique, daughter Ivy and son Elliott) joined this event as well (they are in the picture above, top left). Dave being there was a HUGE help when it came time to take the photo shown above. In case you can't tell what it is, it is the giant group of volunteers forming the TELUS "flying t" logo followed by the word "cares". I made my way up to the High Level Bridge to get the bird's-eye view of the group. Using our amazing modern-day technology I communicated with Dave to co-ordinate the whole thing. We talked via cell phone for the most part but when it was difficult to explain what I was seeing I would take a photo with my camera phone and send it to him via text. From those images he was able to get the group to form the proper look. It was a great challenge and I couldn't have done it without his help.

After the River Valley Cleanup I made my way to the Crystal Kids Youth Centre in town. The TELUS volunteers were cooking and serving a great hamburger lunch to the kids. Oh yeah, and we donated $20 000 as well!! This Centre is an amazing place for kids to spend their time and I was so proud that my company was able to give that much money to help them out. The kids certainly loved their lunch and I'm sure the money will go to good use.

inkPulse and WordsWorth

For the fourth year in a row, I was asked to do the graphic design by the Writer's Guild of Alberta. It started with their inkPulse writing camp, but this year I also got to do the poster for their new camp, WordsWorth.

I look forward to these designs every year. We've started a real theme on the inkPulse side, employing my sister-in-law as a model. The WGA has been receptive to the design and almost given me free reign each year.

For WordsWorth, they laid out what they were looking for and here is the result.

Follow the links on the images to find out more. Click here to register for WordsWorth and inkPulse's Sherwood Park, Grande Prairie or Lethbridge camps.

cat & chris & slurpees

Cat & Chris know us through our other place of business. In case people don't know, Brad and I have a common day job as well as our photography.

These two awesome people are getting married out east this summer, but wanted us to do their session so they could show their Edmonton side off to their family and friends back home.

We started early at the Bunches in Parkallen where Cat workls part time. I'm glad I took my allergy pills!

We then moved into where Brad and I thrive. ALLEYS!

Behind Whyte Avenue on a Sunday morning, we found some new spots and Cat & Chris were more than game to let us try some stuff out.

Here is what we got. Check out similar shoots in the Portraits section of our page.

Enjoy!

Head Shots - Mari

I met Mari last year while doing promo shots for Promise Productions' Snow Globe Festival.

She emailed me saying that head shots were long over due and she wanted something gritty. We headed out on a really windy day to one of my favourite parkades. It was way too cold so we headed underground where the parkade was heated.

I love locations like this because it really easy to get several different looks within only a few feet. So many textures and interesting backdrops.

Here is a sampling of some of what we got done that day. For more head shots, swing on by the Promotion section of our site.

The End of The Wheat Pool

It is the end of an era!

Not our poster design, but an awesome one at that. It is such a striking image.

On Friday night Brad and I along with many, many good friends attended the last ever show from The Wheat Pool at the Pawn Shop on Whyte.

It was a night that rocked. A night filled with emotion. A night many won't forget. Local sketch comedy group Moslty Water Theatre and the band Owls by Nature really got the night off on a solid foot. The positive energy in the room was infectious and at the end, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.

The Wheat Pool have been a staple in my music collection for the past seven years and their two albums Township and Hauntario have been a go to gift from our household.

Even though they have played their last tune as a foursome, I know both Brad and I will be listening to the likes of Peniel, SK, Neil Young and Right Arm for years to come.

I was priviledged to take photos for their last show. Below, check out some of the images from the evening.

Thanks for the night. Thanks for the tunes.

Thanks.

My Time with Pancho

As the snow flies once again here in Edmonton, I find myself thinking of the scorching hot days I spent in Cuba only a few weeks ago. I would love to share one of my most memorable days in my life with you all.

Whenever I travel, I make a concerted effort to speak the local language. When in Quebec, French is attempted. In India, I dabbled in a little Hindi. So when in Mexico or Cuba I do everything possible to speak Spanish. One of the servers at the buffet of our hotel (Barceló Solymar for those who might be thinking of a Cuba vacation) was kind enough to help me with my pronunciation and word choice. His name is Francisco, but goes by Pancho. He explained that most people named Francisco are called Pancho (and José’s are called Pepe for some reason). He is a kind, older man with a friendly smile. I appreciated his tutoring very much.

A few days into the trip, he asked me if I would like to get a tour of the community where he lives. My skeptical mind knew there was a catch but I was prepared to spend a few Pesos to get the opportunity to see and photograph the “real” Cuba.

I met up with him at the end of his shift and we started our trek towards town. Shortly after we started walking a taxi driver started honking at us and stopped to say hello. It was a friend of Pancho’s. We got in and sped into town. After our 10 minute ride we got out and I asked Pancho how much I owed. He just waived me along. It was free.

He went to another friend’s house to get the keys to the car he was borrowing for our adventure (I was adding a few more Pesos to the cost I thought I was originally going to be paying).

After stopping for $5 of gas (which I had to force him to take my money for) we were on our way to his little community that is on the outskirts of Varadero. Santa Marta is the official name. It was awesome! We stopped at his house first so he could give me a quick tour of his home. It was nicer than I thought it would be for some reason. It was like a smaller apartment but had everything his family needed.

We then headed to see his mechanic friends. He is getting his car rebuilt after his step-son pretty much totalled it in an accident a while back. The mechanics first looked at me like “Who the hell is Pancho bringing by here???” but quickly welcomed me when they realized I was a friend. We had a quick rum break and then we headed out again.

He showed me various little hangouts in the area and then we headed back to Varadero. We stopped at Kiki’s Club for a drink. Of course it was run by a friend of his (Pancho pretty much knows everyone in Varadero, I’m convinced). We ordered a few drinks and had some cheese bread (some really, really good cheese bread I should add) and when I asked for the bill, it was about ¼ of what it should have been. His friend gave us a pretty sweet deal for sure.

After Kiki’s Club we headed to Plaza Las Americas where his wife Ana works. She is a sweet older lady as well – a former History teacher who now works at a t-shirt store. We left Ana at her store and we explored the mall. There is a big department/grocery store in the mall that we went into. I was noticing the prices of things and pointed out the price of powdered milk to Pancho. He started to explain that it is very expensive for them to buy things. Aha… here it comes. The big “we’re so poor, can you give us money Brad?” speech. I asked him what I could get for him. Was there something I could buy them? He immediately got upset. He said “NO! I can’t complain about how bad we have it. Everyone in the world has their own problems. We aren’t the only ones.” And that was the last time we would talk about the living conditions in Cuba.

We zipped back to pick his wife up after her shift ended and made our way to Don Quixote’s for a drink. I had a Mojito, Pancho got a Cuba Libre and Ana had a beer. When it was time to leave, Pancho asked the bartender (another friend of his) for the bill. They started arguing. My Spanish was not good enough to figure out what they were saying. Finally, Pancho turned to me and said “He won’t let us pay”. HA!! How horrible. I put 5 Pesos on the bar for him and he would not take it. I forced it on him (stuck it under an ashtray) so he cracked a beer and handed it to Pancho. It was awesome to see such friendship.

He dropped me off at the hotel and when I was getting out I thanked him for such a great day and asked that he take some money for his time. He pushed my hand away and said “It was my pleasure. It was fun for me. You are my friend”.  I walked out of that car with the greatest feeling in the world.

He had the next day off but when I saw him the next day he explained that him and Ana would like to have me over to his house for a traditional Cuban dinner.

So a few days later I was off in a cab to Santa Marta to meet Pancho. I had a meal of rice and beans, slow-cooked pork, yucca, fried bananas, and sautéed green peppers. That’s not to mention the best Cuba Libre I have ever had to drink!!!

A few hours later I was off in a cab back to my hotel. What an experience.

On my last day at the hotel I gave Pancho a letter thanking him for the great experience and had a bit of money stuffed in there. I knew he wouldn’t let me pay him anything so I had to hide it. I know he will appreciate the money but he’s probably mad that I did it.

The reason I love travelling is seeing new worlds, hearing other languages and experiencing other cultures. I did not ever think I would get the real look at Cuba that I got this time. I will never forget it.

Alex & Frank - New Year's Nuptials

We met Alex and Frank several months ago amid a large traffic jam and some nice coffee at Transcend. As soon as Brad and I got to know them, we hed a good feeling about how their engagement and wedding sessions were going to go.

They are a couple knew what they wanted, had awesome ideas but were ready for us to let our creative juices flow. As you can see from the shoot we did for their engagement, the creative angle was one they embraced. When they brought the idea of a World War II coming home shoot, our imaginations lit up and to date, is one of Brad and mine's favourite sessions.

Now, on New Year's Eve comes their wedding and man was it cold. Not in the sense of the temperature, but there was a wicked wind running through the city that day and poor Alex and her bridesmaids were only in dresses and Uggs.

We started at their hotel and then moved to a downtown parkade. It wasn't until we were trying to get some nature type shots that the wind cut through my large coat that we called it a day.

This wedding was a real treat for us. We had such a blast and it was a fantastic way to ring in the new year.

A huge thanks also goes out to Julianne Cragg at A Modern Proposal, the great staff at the Country Lodge and Raymond Laurie at Impark.

All the best Alex & Frank. Thanks for letting us be a part of the big day!

Check out other wedding shots we did in the Weddings section of our page.

Cake Smash

Conor is already one. Time sure flies!

He came to our house so smartly dressed for this party. Just about a three piece suit. So much so that I think given the right business card, he may already be selling you real estate!

Then the cake came out. Goodbye clean suit. Hello tears!

He got into it a first but then the time of night kicked in (alng with all the people watching and giggling at his every move) and the waterworks came. Selfishly, the shots with the the tears always seem to be the best ones from these shoots.

I leave it to you to decide! Check out the Portraits section of the page to see others of these types of photos.

Send in the Girls Burlesque - March Madness

Send in the Girls Burlesque is BACK!

This time they are hitting the New City Legion with an awesome review called 'March Madness'. I always love working with these girls. Always the consummate professionals. They know what they want from the photos but aren't afraid to try something new.

I love how these photos turned out. Brad and I were talking about some of the most rewarding elements of photography for us, and right up on the list is the ability to take seemingly bland locations and make them into something awesome.

50 points if you can figure out where these ladies are standing!
