L'unithéatre

We were honoured when earlier this summer L'unithéatre approached us to help design the promotional material for their entire season. They challenged us to come us a series of images that had the same feel but each connected to one individual element of each show. We are used to shooting with actors to help create this kind of material so it was fun to play around with photo techniques to pull off a tone with inanimate objects. Only for La Passion de Narcisse Mondoux did we actually reach out to some lovely hand models to help build the image.

The first show of the season, LES BLUES DES OUBLIÉES is up and runs until October 24th. Please check it out if you get the chance. From the reviews they have been getting, it looks to be a stellar show. Here are the details:

Bone Cage

Theatre Yes is back and we are happy to be working with them again.

This time they are producing Catherine Banks' Bone Cage. We love working with this group.  Every time they approach us, we know we are in for something cool, and that we will have the artistic license to help sell the emotion of their upcoming project.

In meeting for this show, we talked a lot about the rage and frustration that is an underlying current throughout the story. We made that a central theme of the images. There has been a lot of positive feedback on how these turned out.

See for yourself, then follow the links to get all the info on the show.

The play is an urgently contemporary coming of age story that calls out poignantly to Alberta  where the backbone of the economy is built on volatile industries and jobs often come at a distinct personal price.

It's Love and Other Reasons to Panic

This was such a fun session. We spent a lot of time with Elisa and Delia trying to nail the tone of their upcoming show, It's Love and Other Reasons to Panic premiering this week at the Edmonton Fringe festival. We love how this turned out and would also love if you went to see them in action.

Here are the show details:

Victoria and Rachel are an unlikely pair, and when they meet it's not exactly love at first sight. Victoria, not feeling completely fulfilled, leaves her relationship of 7 years to rediscover who she is and find her confidence. Rachel is a powerhouse with a bit of a clumsy side perfectly happy with being on her own and in control of her own life. But when Rachel meets the man of her dreams, these ladies lives will take a very different turn; especially since Rachel's new love interest, is Victoria's ex-fiancée. They say opposites attract, but will their new friendship survive being this opposite? Come and have a laugh while these two ladies try and figure out what love means.

Drat the Cat

Two summers ago, we had the pleasure of working with Kate Ryan and Plain Jane Theatre for their production of Little Fish at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival. It was a great shoot with a fun group of people.

Because of that great experience, I was excited when a message from Kate arrived in my inbox asking for some photos and design work for their new show Drat the Cat. She explained that she wanted to capture the feel of the original poster, while still giving it a fresh take.

We shot several different looks and then landed on the final poster image you see below. We encourage you to check out their production at the end of the month. Looks like it's going to be a great time. Details below.

Ludwig & Lohengrin

We love doing shoots for theatre companies. We get even more excited when they ask us to follow up with promotional design work.

That's exactly what Third Street Theatre did for their upcoming production of Ludwig & Lonhengrin, which is opening at the end of this month. Even though they are based out of Calgary, it worked out that the playwright and star was in Edmonton last week so we were able to arrange a session.

We went to the river valley and set out to capture the feel of this production. The grey skies really lent to the ambience and I think that comes through in the shots.

Check out the details for their production below and if you like what you see, hit up their Facebook page to stay up to date with this and future productions.

The Laws of Thermodynamics

Sessions like this just get our creative juices following. We can always count on the good people of Theatre Yes! to throw us some awesome challenges and this shoot was no different. Last year, it was shooting in a variety of elevators throughout the downtown core for the National Elevator Project. This year, the apocalypse.

How to we pull of a post-apocalyptic look in the middle of winter in Edmonton? Why, we head to a scrapyard of course.

Cody Porter was such a trooper. Climbing anywhere we asked. Getting handful after handful of sand poured on his head. All to help ensure we got the best possible images we could.

If you are interested in checking out the show. Here are the details.

Cheerleader!

Our hearts broke the morning we heard of the Roxy fire.

It became very important to help in any way we could. When we found out that Human Loser, the company that had their opening night scheduled the day the fire broke out, was going to be holding a one night only read of Cheerleader! at the Timms Centre for the Arts, we knew if was where we could jump in.

It was a stripped down version of the show but the crowd was enthralled. Here are a few images from the night.

Ligature Marks_

The Edmonton International Fringe Festival is right around the corner. This is one of my favourite times of year because the theatre scene explodes with creativity and photography wise, it really allows us to flex our design muscles.

One such project is Ligature Marks by What It Is Productions. I have worked with this combination of artists a few times in the past so I had a sense of what they were wanting.

This show looks great. I had a chance to read the script and it seems like a very interesting project.

Make you you get your tickets soon!

See you at the Fringe!

A Bronte Burlesque

Bronte---Roxy---Poster---Web.jpg

Well, the ladies at Send in the Girls Burlesque are at it again. This time, it is a remount of their sold out and held over show, A Bronte Burlesque.

As usual, we got tasked with creating all of their visual material. This show having a new cast required us to do some re-shoots and create new images, featuring all four Bronte siblings. We tried to maintain the feel of the original shoot, while giving it a fresh look at the same time.

Here is what we came up for them. If you are interested in seeing the show, the information is listed below.
