Make Out City

Make Out City!

A very cool band with a very cool look. We struggled when planning this session to find a place that would fit their 1960s mod look. We stumbled on the Cask & Barrel which couldn't have been a better, more accommodating place.

The feel we were going for was a sense of hanging out with these four, but 50 years ago. With a little scotch, a few cigarettes and a rad location I think we pulled it off.

Check out these guys on Facebook.

Melissa & Ben

"Let's head out to the old Keillor road", Ben said. Being from Calgary, I had no idea what he was talking about. How cool could an old road be?

Very cool. Such a unique location and right in the heart of our city.  We had the pleasure of meeting Melissa 4 years ago when she was a bridesmaid for her sister's wedding (which was only our 2nd wedding working together).

We can't wait for this wedding only a few short weeks away. Till then, check out their fun engagement session.

Gaea & Kurt are Married

You may remember these two from their awesome engagement session in the mystery location. Well now it is time for the big day!

Man, this was a great wedding! During the entire day it looked like it was going to rain, but not one drop fell. It was just the perfect lighting conditions outside. The bridal party was hilarious. But the best part was the pace of the whole day. It was so well timed and so relaxed.

We had a great time and I think the fun comes through in the shots.

Congrats Gaea and Kurt!

Elizabeth & Trent

This was probably one of my most favourite maternity sessions. The light was awesome. The weather was perfect. It all just clicked.

Elizabeth and Trent are on the verge of their new person making their appearance into the world. I think we probably got these pictures just in time. Elizabeth told me as we were shooting that Trent was a little apprehensive about the whole portrait session thing, but in the end, all three of us had a really good time.

Can't wait to meet your little human!

Miss I is 1

She's just too cute! Every time I pointed the camera at her, she would just give the best looks. These three are long time friends and I was honoured to have them ask me to do a session.

It was so much fun watching her walk around and explore downtown. From the looks of it, she was having fun too.

Anna-Maria & Dwayne

Anna-Maria & Dwayne are getting married August 31st this year and from what we hear, it might end up being one of the largest weddings we have been involved with. Can't wait!

This happy couple are avid golfers so they thought it would be nice to head to a course for their engagement shoot. They arranged to have photos done at Jagre Ridge Golf Club and we were glad they did. We managed to find several great locations around the course (without actually putting ourselves in danger of being hit by a stray ball).

Dwayne even managed to get a bunch of photos with his Harley! I'm pretty sure he is thrilled to have images of him with his beautiful lady on his motorcycle.

Here are some photos from the session:

Amy & Ian

We can't wait for this wedding. It takes place in one of my favourite areas of town, the theatre district. While we wait, we had a chance to go out with these two (and their dogs) into Mill Creek Ravine and get a fun series of shots.

I love that Amy asked us to get some photos of them beside the fire. I'm glad she did because I think we really captured these two in their element.

Check them out and let us know what you think!

Paula & Andrew

Paula & Andrew had their first date at the Red Ox Inn (9420-91 Street). We thought it was great that the restaurant was kind enough to let them to return to the scene to photograph their engagement photos before they opened for business a few Saturdays ago.

This couple is set to get married August 16th of this year - just over a month away!! We are looking forward to spending their big day with them. The engagement shoot was a lot of fun and we expect the wedding day will be even better.

Here are a few images from their engagement shoot for you:

The Dungarees are back!

We are so honoured to have The Dungarees ask us back to do their latest set of promotional photos. The last round we did was more of a night shoot where we got to use our lights. This one was right around sunset. These guys are just awesome and it is always fun to work with them. We even got to do some climbing.

If you are in Calgary for the Stampede this year, make sure to check them out opening for Reba McEntire  at the Saddledome on July 13th.

Moon River Mercantile

There is a very cool new vintage clothing shop in the Highlands area of Edmonton called Moon River Mercantile (11209-65 Street). A few weeks ago I did a photo shoot at their shop to showcase several of their fantastic vintage finds. Jill & Michael who own Moon River Mercantile are great people and I can't wait to work with them on more exciting projects this year!

Of course I couldn't leave their shop without picking up 2 ties and a pocket square for myself! I was thrilled to find they stock a decent amount of men's items as well.

Check out their shop if you get a chance. In the meantime, check out a few of the photos from the shoot below.

Brad

Baby George

Both Joelle and Andrew are really good friends of mine. I have had the pleasure of photographing their ever growing family over the years. Whether it be a maternity session,  1st year photos or them participating in our Fall Portrait Blitz  last year, I feel like I have documented a great portion of their recent lives.

...and now they welcome George to the family. We actually got shot with everyone including the two dogs this time! Quite a feat! Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Baby Elizabeth

My niece Megan had a baby girl on March 8th. That makes me a Great Uncle... wow!! Yes I can still remember when Megan was born and now she has brought little Elizabeth into the world. I feel old!

Elizabeth was a great little model for the photo session, only crying a tiny bit. This was my first time seeing her so it was a pretty special session for me.

Congrats Megan & Austin!

Here are a few photos of my little Great-Niece:

Baby James

Baby James was born on March 4th to our friends Chris & Cat. We shot their engagement photos and then they went off and got married in Nova Scotia. We got to meet James last week and take some photos of this little cutie! It's amazing how much hair he has!! He's quite a little model. He cried for a few minutes at the start but then did fantastic after that.

We are very happy for Chris & Cat... James is adorable and it's great to see you are all doing well.

Here are a few of the images we were able to get of little Baby James.

365 - A Year's Worth of Images

Dave's 365

It seemed like an easy idea to begin with. A picture a day, every day, for all of 2013. We decided to do it right as January 1st rolled around. As we began so quickly, we didn't take much time to work out the logistics. Simply, we had to post a shot a day. As the weeks and months went on, we talked about how maybe we should have alternated each day, Brad then me. We also said maybe we should have committed to one photo each a week.

In the end we stuck to our guns. Not because we owed anyone anything, but to challenge ourselves. In my opinion, the best result of this project was not only the firing up of the creativity required to post an image we were proud of every day, but how weirdly in sync Brad and I are. On several occasions, our images would be very similar, would be an awesome contrast, or would be on a theme, as if we planned it. We never did.

Now that we are several weeks into 2014, I miss this daily project. We are working on our next photo series. Enjoy my top 20 shots from 365 - 2013.

After, check out the 4 FULL galleries with all the shots from the project. 365 page 1, 2, 3 & 4.

Brad's 365

When Dave suggested the 365 Project late in 2012, I thought it was a fantastic idea. We both started out with photography because of our love of capturing images - simple as that. Taking photos of ordinary objects or locations and somehow making them seem different than people had seen them before was, at one time, my only goal with photography. Once I started doing photography as more of a business, it appeared that my camera only came out of the bag when I had a portrait session or a wedding to photograph. Finally, this project would force us to get back to what we loved about photography in the first place.

One measly photo a day – that couldn't be too difficult, right? Well the weather proved to be quite a challenge for me with this project. A cold January meant trying to find things indoors and by February I had already captured images of all of the interesting (or not interesting depending on your opinion) of the items in my apartment (including the elevator, the parkade, the lobby) and it was still quite cold out.

As the year went on and the weather turned nicer, I would go for little photo walks around my downtown neighbourhood. I would find myself many blocks from home and have several “interesting” photos to work with when I got home. It was so great to be able to start looking around at the world again with a more artistic eye. This project rekindled that passion I had to begin with.

When the weather got cold again I found myself setting up the lighting kit in my apartment and tried to find ways to make objects appear different by using light. That was another great part of this project. I loved using my knowledge of light to showcase objects, rather than people, for a change.

Two trips to Vancouver, a trip to Seattle and a vacation in Cuba certainly helped fill out the photos for the year.

In the end, I am very happy with the photos I was able to post through 2013. Here is a look at the 20 images I am most proud of.

A Bronte Burlesque

Bronte---Roxy---Poster---Web.jpg

Well, the ladies at Send in the Girls Burlesque are at it again. This time, it is a remount of their sold out and held over show, A Bronte Burlesque.

As usual, we got tasked with creating all of their visual material. This show having a new cast required us to do some re-shoots and create new images, featuring all four Bronte siblings. We tried to maintain the feel of the original shoot, while giving it a fresh look at the same time.

Here is what we came up for them. If you are interested in seeing the show, the information is listed below.
